I confess that I will never understand people's fascination with serial killers. I find them repulsive and not something I would want to fill my head with. To me, giving them limelight just feels like giving them a thumb up in some way.
I like crime fiction though.

I'm not fascinated with the killers themselves. They fill me with disgust & rage. It's the evil nature that's hard to wrap your head around. How people can get this low extremely devoid of humanity. The psychology behind it. The backgrounds. Lessons to learn. How it can be prevented. The hard work & intelligence to catch them. Seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Solace to victims' families. Justice.

@Spica That's the problem. Whenever I stray into those topics I notice your take on this seems to be in minority. A vast majority seems to be simply getting off on vicarious powertrips or on trauma porn or try to be super antisocial and edgy. Maybe the disgust comes even less from the sick individuals themselves than the crowd of seemingly normal people with completely twisted values who are after the sensation first and foremost. I mean...they always seem so rife that they must walk among us.
Spica · 31-35, F
I understand. Good thing is – the narratives of said documentaries often strongly incriminate and condemn their actions in a way that the average normal person with a good moral compass can relate to

yeah......
Yesterday I was listening to a tale about a woman who tried to kill her husband with frog poison. She instructed her new young boyfriend to take a toothbrush to extract frog poison...it did not work...

Yup, I've been fascinated by it for a while now.
There are a few I can't delve too deeply into because of how dark they are though.

Agreed. At one point you're like this is just too much @thepropulsivepanda
thepropulsivepanda · 31-35, M
@Spica Yup, definitely so. Especially Robert Berdella and Lawrence Bittaker/Roy Norris. Just so horribly cruel.
Spica · 31-35, F
Also Ted Bundy and John Gacy. Extremely horrible @thepropulsivepanda

No, it's murder porn in my opinion. Very popular with females for some reason.

@Spica That's a weird way to patronise my opinions. It's true, shows glorifying serial killers have a much greater audience than the shows that portray them as the unlikeable creeps they are.

I admit I have to be in a certain frame of mind to watch those, but I do find the documentaries about criminals of the past, and the process of apprehending them, fascinating.
99% of the time it is a genre I skip and don't find interesting (serial killers in particular are something I have no desire to watch, I think they are vile humans and I don't even want that in my mind)
but once in awhile something comes along, which maybe interesting for other reasons, and also just so happens to be "true crime" so I will watch it
The most recent example would be The King Who Never Was ... in this specific case, if nothing else, at least the Corsican scenery is interesting
to me the best documentaries are generally focused on the environment, science, travel, food, and some other stuff
