Deforestation, wherever it occurs, is a tragic rape of our ecology.
One of the biggest problems, is that it provides a huge boost to the economies of the third world, and emerging countries, where it happens.
It's easy for us to sit back in our relatively wealthy countries, with our advanced economies, and criticise.
A question we need to ask ourselves is: What are our governments doing, to help these developing countries, to develop their economies without destroying their ecologies.
The answer to that question I can tell you, is little or nothing.
We are happy to consume the products, that are made from the results of deforestation.
We are greedy, and self serving, and complacent.
We sit here in our, greed, and complacency, tut tutting at the corruption, and lack of real effort, put into ending the destruction, but if it means a penny on taxes, we don't want to know about helping, poorer countries to turn their economies around.
The video was indeed very powerful, but what it really illustrated, was the greed of the rich countries of the world.
In the end, in all things. Individuals, societies, and the world, gets what it deserves.

Sadly I cannot really agree with you concerning the palm oil plantations giving a boost to the economy of Indonesia and other countries where it takes place,it boosts the wealth of those who own the plantations, but does very little to helps the poor people at the bottom who in fact are worse off because of it.It is also irreversibly destroying wild life and the ecology.Sadly most people in affluent countries who use products made with palm oil are not aware of the looming disaster,or they simply do not care.It is never mentioned on the news for all to see and the corporations who buy it,do so because it is cost effective and maximise their profit.Sadly this world has become a corporate world with a corporate mentality of profit and more profit at any cost. One day,may be we will wake up but it will be too late. Those who try to do something about it often take great risk, mostly if they appear to have some success trying.Honest politicians in countries like South America and Indonesia who threaten the wealth of the rich do not last long.Sadly nothing much can be done as long as those in power, who call the shots in more affluent countries like America, Britain and Australia are only interested in maximising their profit and give little thought to anything else, even denying climate change in some cases.

Thanks for that. I accept that the first paragraph of my comment, is open to question.
Thank you for taking the trouble to put me right.
I'm glad that we are in broad agreement about the rest of my comment.
Ari.
