how should you react to someone who acts 'familiar' when you don't know him / her

i've had this at times in the past with people, someone being too familiar with me when they don't know me? i find that very annoying, but more important, how should you respond to this situation? especially if you're someone like me who easily takes offence.

I don't like that at all but I'll tolerate it for a very short time and then end up being rude about.
