"lol" was used to react to *other people* when it first became Internet language. It meant "You really made me laugh out loud".

Now everybody uses it to react to themselves -- to say "I am so funny", and to mean "The point I am making is so great that I am laughing, so it must be a great point".

Stop that. Run from the inner child. Run.
