It's also worth remembering that, if it comes down to it, it likely won't be the man asking - but the Church. Unless he marries a Catholic, or someone who converts to the faith... he will be unable to receive the sacraments, lol.
What might seem like a joke to you could have serious repercussions for him - especially if he is in good standing with the Church and he wants to keep it that way.
