Oftentimes closure is that abrupt and open ended

Don’t feel like the Lone Ranger. My best friend for more than fifty years dated a man for about six weeks.

Then he did that so-affectionate thing of ghosting her. Didn’t call. Avoided her at work. Silence.

We (she and I) talked about it. A lot.

One evening she said, “I decided. I’m going to go look for him.” He was on a riding mower, cutting grass. He wouldn’t look at her, wouldn’t respond in any way.

She followed him, her on foot, him on the mower, circle after circle around his three acre property.

He never looked at her. At last she gave up and went home.

The next night she tracked him down at the only restaurant he patronized. She walked in and sat down across from him. He dropped his head on the table moaning “leave me alone, leave me alone.”

Finally, she went home.

No means no.

She did get the closure she sought when he had a heart attack at that very same table just three weeks later and died before EMS arrived.
