I've never been to an AA meeting, but from my perspective so far, it seems there's a tad bit of brainwashing there.

The guy I've been seeing for about a year struggles with drug use. One time when he quit using, I noticed he went silent and never wanted me to come over again. Then when he started using again he asked me to come over a lot. I don't even do drugs, (except thc gummies) and neither of us drink.. Then one time he told me at the meetings they tell them they aren't supposed to date or hang out with anyone for the whole first year of their sobriety. I could see where they tell them to lay low and enjoy their own company for a couple of months, but to not be around people except for at the meetings seems kinda dumb. I mean what if the person they want to date is a healthy influence and wants to get them out and take walks, and do non drug use type of activities? He told me one time when he's not using, he does nothing but attend meetings, go to work, then goes home to sleep. He doesn't talk to me anymore

That's sad and I think you're right that a healthy companion could do so much good
