Is endless messaging back and forth on dating apps "the" new form of dating now?

Have we completely or nearly completely replaced in-person interactions with purely virtual ones now? Actual online dating vs. meeting from online?

I prefer messaging first. I don't wanna just go on dates immediately with a stranger. Like this it's a stranger that I know about a bit.
Plus I googile them first to see if they're criminals

@DefNotTravelguy different people have different definitions of time before dating, but yeah.

@greensnacks True, but what used to be safe for taking time, now may not be safe now anymore. The Internet has gotten way too easy to follow rabbit holes into endless numbers of things, and people's attention spans, memories, and emotional hold spans are very very short now. They will lose interest very very quickly the more time goes on without progressing unfortunately.

@DefNotTravelguy well, that or they're just not interested in the person after exchanging a X amount of messages

Oh God, dating apps are so bad
DefNotTravelguy · 41-45, M
@Nebula I'm not a serial killer haha

@DefNotTravelguy are you sure?
DefNotTravelguy · 41-45, M
@Nebula I'm fairly certain

I have never tried dating apps, but I thought the point was to meet in person. Has it really changed from making dates, to just chatting?
DefNotTravelguy · 41-45, M
@Blanchy That was supposed to be the purpose once upon a time, and I haven’t tried them in a few years. But from what I’m gathering it’s gotten to that point. Endless exhausting messaging back and forth with nobody actually getting a date with anyone, or “matching” people but nobody replies to attempts to start a conversation. Then the apps block certain things unless you pay them more money. And a good percentage of the contacts you get are scammers. It’s just sounding like a big scam.

I think it's ridiculous. Hopefully it'll return to in person meeting again eventually.
DefNotTravelguy · 41-45, M
@pripyatamusementpark Pretty much. People are too comfortable on their devices now, and generally more closed off / shut down. COVID didn't help with that at all unfortunately.
@DefNotTravelguy Yeah ...that's sad

@deadgerbil Yep. Scammer users, and scammer platforms.
