What are pros and cons of dating websites?

Have you ever tried dating website? Did it work out? I am thinking to join next month. Any recommendations? Looking for a serious relationship. Is it expensive? What are do and donts from your experience?

I met my late husband on a dating website. We talked for nearly a year on line, then he drove from Pittsburgh to Philly and we met in person.

It probably is fairly expensive these days. There are a LOT of scammers. You have to weed them out carefully.

1. Don't give out your phone number to just anybody.
2. If the person seems too good to be true, tread carefully.
3. If they are frequently unavailable (off on secret military missions, working in remote locations, etc., odds are they're married or scammers.
4. Red flag if they love you too soon.

@Mamapolo2016 Thank you for that and happy you met your husband there. I believe is possible
@MissElla Thanks and good luck. Use your head first, then consult your heart. The reason we go on dating sites is because we hope lightning will strike. The scammers know that and use it. 🤗

Dating a website is awkward. I prefer dating people.

@Doomflower How is it?

@MissElla exciting. Anxious. Sometimes scary.

Well first about the pros
They have crazy sounding nicknames & avatars,large fan following, and and act as if they know every other member of opposite sex from childhood days.
And then there are the cons - pics of rockstar,sport champs or greek god/goddess as avatar, not many comments or posts, talk in DM mostly & sleek, pompous profiles

Some pros are cons, and some cons are pros.
💜🙄😜

Not many people are dating right now due to Covid. Previously, I paid for dating websites and I will tell you they are a waste of money. Most dating sites have fake profiles, no need to pay for that, but since you pose a good question I'll give you an list based on the many dates I've been on:

Pros:
-People will show their true colors when hiding behind a screen.
-It's easier to meet diverse groups of people.
-There are more choices.

Cons:
-People who you meet online tend to not really want a relationship, are bored. This was true before the pandemic but even more true now.
-You don't know who you are meeting no matter what they say. This opens the door to cheaters who will use you, and even violent people.

In conclusion, it's better to stay away from dating websites, meet someone in person, or, to be happy single.

I've done it before, with decent results. One of the pro's is that,unlike being somewhere like a bar, at least you're pretty certain that those you're meeting are also looking for a relationship.

You just have to be patient with them is all. They're both good and bad, and so if you want a serious relationship you have to be very very patient. Takes a lot of sifting and searching to meet the right person on them.
I've had three very positive outcomes. However, they evolved slowly and with my caution. I do have a slight flair for "reading" people even in print after a few exhanges.
Pros- Money making
Cons-none

@mysteryespresso So is expensive?

I've done dating apps. The other person let's you know what they want you to know without letting you know the bad things about their past.
Do lots of digging before committing to that person.
This advice applies anytime you meet a stranger. It's easier to get a referral from a friend.

I’ve dated people I met online before but never from a dating website.
travelguy01 · 41-45, M
@MissElla Yahoo Chat years ago, including my ex-wife.
I always tended to prefer chance encounters that way, over prescribed dating sites. The latter just seemed fake and many people on there too weird or desperate.
MissElla · 26-30, F
@travelguy01 oh ok..yahoo chat, haven't heard that one before..
travelguy01 · 41-45, M
@MissElla It was Yahoo Messenger back in the day, similar to AOL Instant Messenger. Not really a thing anymore. Other more modern social media platforms have replaced it.
My best friend talked me into going on Black People Meet when she went on it several years ago. I talked with all kinds of people online and by phone, as did she, but we ended up meeting guys offline.
