American Visions Vol. 3 - The Wilderness & The West

Nature and not culture. Looking way back, one can't describe this one life bringing nature of American society and art any better. For one, so-called "conquering the West" was seen from the very start as a manifest destiny, and art indeed played its own role in that. One thinks immediately here of the drive to near extinction of the American woodland and then plain Indians along with the bisons. Or should one rather say the constant aim of planned genocide of the indigenous people and animals of North America? A different term or word here or there doesn't change a fact. Moreover, something big like the American Civil war didn't change anything major then either. The steam train, however, brought so-called progress and everything bad was blotted out.
