So, being a Navajo..

It’s interesting seeing some of these comments which are pretty kinda not how we should be homogeneous in our thinking…

Natives come in all shapes and sizes

Even colors

Hair styles

Hair types (Not just straight or black)

Varying cheek bones

Statures

Etc…

Also if you’re Navajo you’re sacred name is

A. Not for Anyone (but close family) to know as it could be used against you
B. Not going to be a simple animal name. It’s much more linguistically complex
C. Going to be withi the 4 sacred mountains

Some of y’all asking about these stereotypical nonsense attributes…

I just don’t get it…

Also, you’re great Great grandmother who was a Cherokee princess?

Not real. (More than likely your family wants to be a part of history in some way and made this shit up)

If you grew up singing the sacred songs, eating/cooking the food, hearing the stories, doing the ceremonies, speaking/reading/writing the language w the community then you have/are a part of tribe.

It’s not in your blood. Blood quantum is ridiculous. No ones 100% or 1/2 or .25 Native blood. That’s colonizer nonsense.

Your culture is in your spirit.

If not.

Don’t claim it until you have.

My opinion. That is all.

@ozgirl512 Appreciate you! I just don’t like seeing people claim something I hold dearly and not showing it the proper respect.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@AnthroKenji totally understand and agree with you...I remember the rukus recently over the feathered headdress worn by the chiefs (?) Of some tribes... And how they are being misappropriated
AnthroKenji · 36-40, M
@ozgirl512 It’s all horrible to see and people can have opinions and that’s fine but not experiencing the culture of that which you want or feel entitled to an opinion on us a weird way of thinking.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@AnthroKenji yep, and unfortunately many of us of caucasian descent see it was normal
AnthroKenji · 36-40, M
@ozgirl512 I’ve been lucky enough to meet a few caucasians that see the complex nuances. But yes people are uh, quite entitled when it comes to opinions on people that are not them.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@AnthroKenji true... But from where I sit, things were changing, slowly and often too late
AnthroKenji · 36-40, M
That’s fair. I just wish people would actually meet the people they want to have an opinion on before forming the opinion. @ozgirl512

@AnthroKenji Ah, there's the problem right there... You're expecting logic!
AnthroKenji · 36-40, M
@ozgirl512 Yeah I’m expecting people to
inquire, I expect them to talk and I expect them to negotiate their identities and learn. Why is that so much to ask these days!!?
QueenandCrown · 41-45, F
@AnthroKenji For different reasons..many are not really interested in learning about the cultures of others, even if they like to 'borrow' some aspects of it.
And then there's the accountability for certain people. If they learn about our history then they also learn about theirs which doesn't always paint the pretty picture they've been taught to believe in.
