My visits to Canada have always involved very pleasant encounters with people. I also knew some very friendly Canadians in college, and we have hosted some Canadians who are travelling on long drives across the continent . We participate in a travel hosting program run by the Mennonite church: we are in a directory, and people call us if they need a place to stay for a night, and we can call others when we are travelling. We have hosted Canadians and stayed with Canadians. We have had wonderful experiences those times as well.

My sense about Canada is that it is trying, although imperfectly, to promote the "salad bowl" model rather than the "melting pot" that the US likes to cite. That is, Canada is struggling with keeping a balance between national unity and cultural diversity. That is a tough balancing act, but I respect and applaud the effort.

Most importantly, Canada has Tim Horton's!
