I really want to believe this.
room101 · 51-55, M
is there something in it that you find hard to believe?
berangere · 80-89, F
@room101:May be I am wrong but people are starting to get used to terrorist attacks as the new norm and just "get on with it" after yet another terrorist attack. And there are many sharia law courts in England operating in tandem with British law and this is disquiting.
room101 · 51-55, M
@berangere: there are NO sharia law courts in England operating in tandem with British law. There are Muslim communities that try to live under certain elements of sharia law but none of them carry any legal weight whatsoever.
berangere · 80-89, F
@room101: But it still applies when it comes to divorce and if it does then other things could follow.
room101 · 51-55, M
@berangere: not true. Divorce in the UK only works under the rules of British law. Strict Muslims will go to an Imam and may adopt sharia dictates. That's no different to a devout Catholic going to his priest who tells him or her that divorce is forbidden under Catholicism.
room101 · 51-55, M
@berangere: after all of the conversations that we've had on the topic, you should know by now that I'm no fan of Islam. You should also know by now that I don't subscribe to inaccuracies.
berangere · 80-89, F
@room101: But it is still considered legal and the woman is always automatically put in the wrong and told to obey her husband.

room101 · 51-55, M
@berangere: it's not considered legal. If a Muslim woman decides to go against what she is told in this so-called "sharia divorce court", she can legally petition for divorce under British law.

The problem is, Muslim women are generally too terrified to go against there communities. But that doesn't make sharia legal in the UK. Just as the Catholic stance on divorce is not legal.
berangere · 80-89, F
OK I get your point, but why are Muslims women so terrified?
berangere · 80-89, F
@room101: Those courts are not legal but are still allowed to take place.
room101 · 51-55, M
@berangere: there are many reasons.

Generations of religious indoctrination.
Being cut off by their families.
Being ostracised by their communities.
Being beaten by their husbands, fathers, brothers, uncles.....you name it.
Being murdered in an honour killing.

The list goes on and on.
room101 · 51-55, M
@berangere: because we live in a free country where people are allowed to practice their religious beliefs unhindered. Regardless of how abhorrent we may find them.

Until that is, they actually break a law.
berangere · 80-89, F
@room101: And those things are done under sharia law and applied by Muslims who could be classified as "moderate" Muslims? This is what is so disturbing,it keeps happening in Muslim communities and would not be classified as "terrorism".
berangere · 80-89, F
@room101: But they do break the law, when "honour killings" take place and when husbands beat up their wives and restrict their movements, because this keeps happening,so what can be done about it?
room101 · 51-55, M
@berangere: it's not terrorism. How is it terrorism.

If a Muslim woman is beaten and she makes a complaint of domestic abuse, it will be investigated. The person, or persons, responsible will be arrested. They will go to court and, if found guilty, will receive a custodial sentence.

If a woman is murdered, the perpetrator will be arrested and he will be punished with a custodial sentence.

I repeat, the dictates of sharia carry no legal weight.
berangere · 80-89, F
@room101: Yes, we find those practices abhorrent, they go against our cultural beliefs and the very fabric of our society, they are primitive and barbaric, they should not be allowed under the guise of "religion".This is how a cultures can go backward,by turning a blind eye and allowing barbaric actions to take place because "it is a free country".
room101 · 51-55, M
@berangere: if you consider freedom of religious expression as going backwards, then I'm afraid we disagree
berangere · 80-89, F
@room101: I have found an intersting video, what do you make of it?

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IICjsnAQVRc]
berangere · 80-89, F
@room101: Yes, if freedom of religious expression means stoning ,hanging, beheading, amputating limbs, child marriage and accepted domestic violence which includes throwing acid in women's faces and of course "honour" killings.
room101 · 51-55, M
@berangere: does it say anywhere in that video that sharia law actually has any legal force in the UK?

No. It does not.

I live in London. Not in Tower Hamlets but in a borough that has a strong Muslim community. I'm surrounded by Muslims all day, every day. Do I like it? No. Is there sharia law? 100% NO!
berangere · 80-89, F
@room101: OK I am glad to know that regarding the advancement of sharia law in England it is not as bad as we are made to believe, but it is still a concern.
