Why do people pretend like modern culture isn't culture?

Do these people think culture is some fixed, eternal thing that our ancient ancestors codified one day and left alone?

I think it’s just part of a general human trend of lionizing the past. The past is seen as a static, ideal thing that we’ve lost.
