What’s this called ? Weaving ?

A spinning wheel without a treadle. I had an old friend whose hobby was making spinning wheels. He would find a birch tree. cut it down, peel the bark off of it right away then store it in a barn. Some years later he would take the log and make it into a spinning wheel. His all had treadles on them. He was a blacksmith, machinist by trade and did some beautiful work. His spinning wheels were show pieces in many homes in the area.
