Owning slaves must have been the culture at that time. Just like having cattle in the farm. In fact even women were considered as cattle and reason for terms husband and wife, were women were slaves too. Maybe wifery gets abolished soon when marriage system goes for a reform. So that does not mean we can blame all those who had wives in the past as "wife owners".
