I lost respect for my Dad

One night I had a argument with my father. He claimed that white people were better than people of color just because their white. He tried to use a bible reference but I shut him down and tried to get him to see how racist and ignorant he sounded. Growing up these things kept happening with racist jokes and harmful comments about people of color and I was made fun of for defending people who weren't white. I've now learned he was in the KKK for a brief time and we don't speak. Not all of this is due to our differences when it comes to how we view race but I just can't see him as a good person anymore.

Looking back on y parents and grandparents over my lifetime, I realize that each was shaped by the culture and environment they grew up in. I also see how they changed their views over time as they matured and the culture/environment changed. And I see that my own views (toward homosexuality, for example, and more recently toward gender fluid people) have changed as I have become more aware and as my culture/environment changed.
