According to probably my FAVORITE Christmas movie of all time "Violent Night," Santa Claus was originally Nicumond The Red, a very evil and violent Viking warrior, who somehow got turned around due to Christmas magic.
That sounds about as credible as the 4th Century Bishop St. Nicholas, whose generosity and secret giving to the poor helped create the legend of Santa Claus.
