There is a difference between the land of Canaan and Canaanites. Genetic studies have shown that modern populations in the region, do have some degree of Canaanite ancestry, but this is a general pattern among many groups in the region, not a direct lineage from the ancient Canaanites.

There is a more recent phenomenon, specifically the Orthodox North American settlers, backed by American's evangelists, but prior to WWII, the European immigrants, did it legally.

The colonizers were the Ottomans, and the indigenous people did not choose Islam. They were forced at the edge of the sword. Ottomans "owned" Palestine, and they were awarded large swaths of it to the tax collectors, and the largest was the Soursok family, who sold parts of it to Jewish immigrants from Europe.

The Ottomans deemed these transactions legal.
