Seattle Becomes First US City To Ban Caste-Based Discrimination
Relative to the size of its population, the Seattle area has one of the largest per-capita concentration of Indian immigrants, and first generation Indian-Americans.
Unfortunately, some of the immigrants brought along the dreaded cast system. While this did not affect the tech work force, the latter makes up a smaller percentage of the Indian immigrant community, it had deep effects on the rest of the community, and the latter demanded that the city adopt clear non-discriminatory measures to be put in place.
The Seattle City council, last night, voted on and approved, 6-1, the nation's first caste-based discriminatory measure.
