I Am Creative

I think I got "commissioned" to design a pen and paper RPG for someone yesterday. I said that I liked to design my own games for fun, and they asked if I could do one for them. There's no pay (as far as I'm aware, anyway) or anything like that, but I look forward to it nonetheless. I've just got to wait for a 'brief' of what they're looking for in this game, and a write-up of the story it's to be based on (for tone, theme and things like that) and once I've got that, I can get started. I'm so excited, and already started jotting down a few little ideas for game mechanics :D

I used to do loads of board games when I was younger, then I discovered D&D, blew my mind for a while.

@GeniUs: I tend to stick to war games, so this will be a bit of an adventure for me.

I think playability is the main thing in any game and this involves lots of test playing although I've played several (purchased) games which were just bad.
Civilisation (board game) could've been barely tested it was that bad but rejigged for the computer has become possibly the best strategy game of all time. I've also played a number of boring games and some which were just so complicated I got board before getting into them.

@GeniUs: Well, I know that I'm going to keep things simple to increase playability (complexity does not equal depth, after all). Maybe a single dice roll to determine whether or not an action succeeds, based around certain character stats. So say, for example, a character has Charisma 5 (out of 10) - they need to roll a 6+ in order to succeed, and this just shows how convincing they are during that conversation; you roll at the beginning of the conversation, then that roll influences the entire conversation. Hopefully that makes sense.

I'll be interested to see how this game develops.

So will I, if I'm honest.
