I love the sturdiness of items built long ago.
I just saved two claw footed, high back fireside chairs (150+ years old) and a vanity (100+ years old) that I'm excited to give new life.
These old things that people think are trash just need a little work and they'll continue to last.
The chairs are gorgeous. I'll get them reupholstered with black damask so they'll be very gothic. Perfect for sitting by the fire with tea.
The vanity will need sanding and refinishing but it's beautiful.
Many years ago my dad would find old furniture and refinish/paint it, and he would have me hand paint design and details. I would even create my own stencils and airbrush them.
It's strange to me when people don't value things that are made so well and have so much charm.
I don't really enjoy modern aesthetics. Everything is white and sterile. Any affordable furniture is made out of particle board at best. I'm not sure what the appeal is of living in a hospital room.
I just love colors and personality and charm. I like things that last. That's much more valuable to me. Much less wasteful too.
