The US is sending mixed signals, most likely because there is no plan. Trump has said that if Iran does not open the straits of Hormuz in 48 hours, the US will destroy Iran's nuclear power plant. Iran has responded that if it's power plant is attacked, they will attack the energy facilities of us allies in the region, similar to quatar but aimed at shutting down gulf energy supplies for years rather than a temporary disruption. Trump has also said he's considering winding down the operation. In all likelihood, the US will send troops into Iran because that's what Israel wants
