Can russia be removed from United Nations?

"The General Assembly may expel a member from the United Nations. But a Security Council vote to expel a member of the United Nations is required before the General Assembly can vote on it. That preliminary council vote requires the unanimous consent of its permanent members. Russia is a permanent member."

Certainly a Catch 22

it would be dangerous to isolate russia politically even further... harder economic sanctions are needed, and a crackdown on western bankers who facilitate russian oligarchs breaking sanctions.

as these bankers work against the war aims of their governments, they should be charged with treason.

@Yulianna That maybe so, it does however demonstrate the irrelevance of the UN in today's world. A toothless Tiger. Certainly as far as the Security Council goes anyway.

@KiwiBird UN is still the major international forum for exposing behaviour like that of russia, or China with the Uighurs, or many other atrocities that would otherwise carry on in the shadows. the UN takes away the excuse of ignorance.

if it does nothing else, that is a huge thing.

war is a violent extension to diplomacy, but it takes diplomacy to end the violence

(von Clausewitz I think)

kicking russia out of the UN would disable that diplomacy that is required to end the war
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@Tracos russia can not be kicked out of the UN even if every country wanted that. They could unleash nuclear war on Ukraine and or all of NATO and their position in the UN remains secure.

So the answer is no

Heller wrote Catch 22. The permanent member status for countries needs to be looked at, again.

@KiwiBird The veto for permanent members was a big mistake. No doubt the powerful nations thought they were giving themselves a big extra advantage but it has come back to bite them.
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@Really Huge mistake. In February when russia continued it's invasion and war on Ukraine guess who held the actual Presidency of the Security Council. You guessed it. russia.

@KiwiBird ah gotcha, could be could be
