Did the temps go over 40 C? If not, it's not hot. 8-)
senghenydd · M
@zonavar68 The temperature didn't reach 40C however the UK received a Red warning there could be a possibility of a danger to life.

( I'm getting on in years the heat affects me more nowadays than years ago.)

michaela2001 · 70-79
Absolutely remember it! Along with the millions of ladybugs it caused that summer. I also remember the sugar shortage two years earlier.
level1 · 61-69, M
@michaela2001 Yes, and aphids (obviously connected) I had forgotten about that, sugar was so important, always two heaped in my tea
michaela2001 · 70-79
@level1 the sugar shortage was the reason I stopped having two sugars in my tea. I have never had sugar in my tea, or coffe, since. 😄
level1 · 61-69, M
@michaela2001 it did some good then lol
ArishMell · 70-79, M
I think there were two, perhaps three, consecutive, very hot Summers around 1976, with a wet Winter in between. Summer 1976 was hot but also dry for a long time.
Ramrod · 46-50, M
Looks like this coming week will be our first serious heat going from the high 80s to mid 90s here in Ohio. :)

there was far more excitement over america's 200th celebration and NO air condition in most homes. slept in the basement.
level1 · 61-69, M
@1490wayb Yes, not much air conditioning now either haha
1490wayb · 56-60, M
@level1 do retail stores and public buildings have a.c.??
level1 · 61-69, M
@1490wayb definitely, i mean residential - we also had nothing but hot air in cars also
Yep…on the other side of the mountain the forest caught fire.
There was a red sky at night as it burned for ages.

The year I left secondary school
level1 · 61-69, M
@MrAverage1965 I bet you had to sweat out every single lesson!
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
@level1 and A Level exams too
It’s cooler here in Weymouth Dorset and I know that because I traveled from the East Of England to almost West Coast. It’s only 20C here today and where I’m from it was 26 degrees. It’s windy here as well and rains during the night but there are lots of palm trees here.
level1 · 61-69, M
@Gingerbreadspice Yes, it has been unbearable here, but slightly cooler today there will be palm trees in East Anglia at this rate
Picklebobble2 · 61-69, M
The summer of '76 was crazy in that we had 15 consecutive days above 32*C. (89.6 F)

We have had higher temperatures since but not for such a prolonged period.

37.3*C (98.6 F) is the highest so far this year
Picklebobble2 · 61-69, M
@level1 In a modern context (reading about the significant number of injuries and deaths in recent years from heat related incidents) the numbers of deaths attributed to 'misadventure' has grown significantly and worryingly.

Whether it be children in private nurseries or left to their own devices and doing risky behaviour things in dangerous places like rivers or lift shafts or older people in care homes where the management refuse to put the air conditioning on because of costs. Is quite shocking
level1 · 61-69, M
@Picklebobble2 I agree, but also partly better recording and coordinating of statistics also?
Picklebobble2 · 61-69, M
@level1 Oh the older I get the less I trust statistics.
In my view statistics can be manipulated and used in relevant and irrelevant ways.

Look at how Trump has done exactly that with regard to the 'dangers of unchecked immigrants' while bemoaning the loss of farm harvests in America.

It's the same in the UK.
No government wants to introduce laws giving fairer wages and pensions to the workforce and then they moan as to why they can't fill vacancies for jobs nobody wants if it means you have to work a 0-hours contract.

Apparently the Heatwave finished 9am this morning but is expected to return on the 7th July for five days in the UK.

Britain simply isn't geared up for heatwaves we live in a "Tepid Climate".
