Britain's Current Heatwave

I was in the first school in 1957 the world was all very new Britain was experiencing a heatwave, in the school yard the Tarmac was melting after school I popped down to see my Grandfather I told him about the tarmac melting in numerous places in the school yard, at first he didn't believe me, we popped down to the school he could clearly see us children had disturbed the Tarmac.

My Grandfather said if a official temperature reading had been taken in that school yard in his opinion the hottest recorded record in Britain would surely have been broken. I've experienced many heatwaves since I have never seem Tarmac melt.

I can recall that phenomenon too. I think they use a different formula these days, although today (25 June 2026) I hear on the News that some road surfaces are succumbing to the heat.

@FreddieUK Yes I'm not surprised the Railways usually have buckled rails, extreme heat is a problem.

The Tar in the school yard may well of been a impure mixture, in the class we had a Air Conditioner it was the first time I had ever seen one it was to be many years before I ever came across another one.

@senghenydd Luxury!! And what forward thinking.

I taught in the most horrible conditions some summers: top floor of 'glass' building. I felt bad, so how much learning took place heaven alone knows. On our local news last evening we heard of a new-build school with eco-friendly everything including a/c which had to shut because all the other schools had and most of the staff has child care issues. It's got to be a priority, along with hospitals and care homes, I would have thought.
