Let's Put Things Right UK Only Population.

Sorry Ex-pats or overseas friends are barred from any comments, the reason being it's not fair if you don't live here don't comment.
There's too many people who simply don't live in the UK their opinions are based on reading newspapers or watching the BBC.

Convert empty buildings or villages to homes for the homeless
senghenydd · M
@0uijaFinger There's legal problems with empty properties "Forteiture" the owners lose 60% of their ownership in the UK this is caused by leaving them empty too long, the law, on this is very tight.
ninalanyon · 70-79, TVIP
@senghenydd In that case it's easy:
- inequality and all the ills it causes

When I say easy I just mean it's easy to say what needs fixing. Unfortunately the UK has become such a divided and untrusting place that it will be very difficult to implement anything sane without some demagogue convincing the people already let down by poor education and lack of work that they will be the ones who will be worse off.

Perhaps Andy Burnham will shake things up enough that people will be able to see a way forward.
senghenydd · M
@ninalanyon Andy Burnham is the last hope for the Labour Party, sadly most of the Labour MPs I've come across weren't up to the mark I'll leave it at that.

I'm sure Andy Burnham will be the UKs next PM there is a feeling of hope I hope he ticks all the boxes.

Yes your right the UK is very much divided split down the centre, there's reasons which I'll leave to another time I'll do what most of the Politicians are doing and simply sweep the problems under the carpet.

We nowadays have to be careful what we post on-line people are going to jail they won't get me though.

Increased manufacturing.
If we made more stuff the world wanted to buy the economy would improve as a result.

That means scrutinising what we produce and find ways to make it competitive.
gandalf1957 · 61-69, M
@senghenydd I don't think Andy Burnham will make much difference even if he does become PM pretty soon. Yes he has charisma - so did Boris Johnson, but i would never even think of voting Conservative whilst he led the party. A catalogue of previous disasters behind him so that Tory MPs should have known better than to support him for leader BUT he had charisma and could win elections - so too apparently currently does Burnham, As for Burnham, during the last 12 months he has already "U" turned on a number of things leading up to the Makerfield election:
1 Rejoining EU 12 months ago yes standing for election - no because Makerfield was in an area that hugely voted to leave EU.
2 Not being in hock to bond markets 12 months ago - not in hock - by election have to comply with current borrowing rules
3. WASPI women even less than 12 months ago at the start of the campaign I think - compensate by polling day don't compensate.

So that doesn't fill me with confidence that there will be any change in implementing policies and then reversing them. In fact I think that the Labour party will find itself in the same position that the Tories did - change leader and 12 - 18 months later be back in the same poor position in the opinion polls. Then what - change leader again - that didn't do much for the Tories.
senghenydd · M
@gandalf1957 The Labour Party has never been so unpopular you can expect a party in office to lose some voters but this is different Labour held power in the Senedd for twenty six years they are now the third party behind Plaid Cymru and Reform.

I never thought it would be possible, SNP and Reform would be the two largest parties in the Scottish parliament, Labour are finished I think the Tories are in tatters as well.

Going back to Andy Burnham I think he will be our new Prime minister in September, will he save the Labour Party in my opinion no, he's made a big mistake he should of stayed as Mayor of Manchester.

It's difficult to prodict the political map of the UK after the next election Labour certainly will be out of office probably it'll be a hung parliament.
gandalf1957 · 61-69, M
@senghenydd Labour have lost Wales because just as with Scotland they have taken for granted that voters would always vote for them and not listened to legitimate voter misgivings, Whilst not living in Wales, I am of Welsh descent and the family had a holiday home in West Wales from 1960 - 2024, so i do know a little about Welsh politics.

Don't believe though that Reform or the Greens are any more competent than Labour and the Tories!

Hung parliament at Westminster after 2029 you are correct - particularly if Burnham is the new PM and he can get proportional representation through which is something else he supported but I am expecting a U turn on that too,
Raise the minimum wage to a livable wage
senghenydd · M
@0uijaFinger Problem there small companies who aren't doing very well can't afford to pay the wages.
Give back the contents of the British Museum to its rightful owners
senghenydd · M
@0uijaFinger Surely there wouldn't be that much left to display.
gandalf1957 · 61-69, M
Many small companies can't take on young people because of the increase in minimum wage and the increase in employers' national Insurance contributions. In some of these small companies owners are working huge hours and paying themselves less than minimum wage to get their business off the ground.

I see that Sunak & Hunt have made clear that their long term goal was to remove employers' NI altogether with Sunak arguing that the combination of employment taxes together with the advance of AI (Artificial Intelligence) threatens hugely first time job opportunities. I do understand that means that other taxes, corporation tax for example and VAT might have to rise to make up for the loss of employers' NI and individuals tax rates go up as employees' NI is transferred to income tax.
senghenydd · M
@gandalf1957 As an ex-Apprentice myself my first three years weren't very productive my wages weren't great lots of my colleagues quit I'm sure the company we worked for run at a loss training Apprentices I feel sorry for Companies who are struggling to stay in business, our governments should do more to keep them in business, instead of bleeding them dry, forcing them into bankruptcy.
Waveney · M
Make houses more affordable to buy.
senghenydd · M
@Waveney Apparently they were cheaper years ago according to my Late Parents, I think that's right it sort of fits.

Why more caravans aren't available, people are living in house boats and on canal boats I don't know.
gandalf1957 · 61-69, M
@senghenydd that is correct as a multiple of income house priced have increased substantially since the 1960s
Bring back £10 concert tickets
senghenydd · M
@0uijaFinger No one can stop inflation.
ninalanyon · 70-79, TVIP
What about those of us who spend five months a year in the UK, can we comment?
senghenydd · M
@ninalanyon yes of course, however there can't be that many
BluntSm0ker · 100+, M
I don't live in the UK but I did for a long time, there so many things wrong with the UK idk where to begin, but I really dislike how so many people relay on the government to get by, UK doesn't breed go getters, I'm not saying people shouldn't get help from the government but I know whole towns where ppl just sit on dole, go to the pub & they need nothing more in life.
ArtieKat · M
Get rid of Ed Milibrain. The win of the Tories in the Aberdeen by-election last Thursday is hugely significant. Our utilities are sky-high in comparison with the rest of the world, hence our (remaining) industries can't compete.
School system is broken
senghenydd · M
@Carysoflife In what way do you consider the school system is broken, you'll have to excuses me it's years since I attended school.
@senghenydd classroom size , constant exams and pretty much we don’t learn anything but prepare for GCSEs
senghenydd · M
@Carysoflife Yes classroom size counts, Teachers should be accountable poor grades should be looked at.
Pot holes in the roads
senghenydd · M
@0uijaFinger I have found in the past if these sections of our roads haven't been reported to our Councils.
@senghenydd We have a natural spring under the hill we live on so they pop up all the time. We just need the water company to channel it properly
senghenydd · M
@0uijaFinger There was a Spring in my locality when I was a boy, it has now disappeared no road problems there, it's not a busy road.

Looking to put teenage males back into the working population - I'm not quite sure where they are going other than onto the dole queue but all the professions - doctors, dentists, vets, solicitors, accountants. teachers seem to be being filled with females and I guess the boys make up the vast bulk of the NEETs (Not in Employment, Education or Training). I do wonder whether the idea of National Service for those long term male NEETs so that they have the possibility of team work and learning a trade whilst being paid was such a bad idea after all.
senghenydd · M
@gandalf1957 I agree with you Women are taking jobs that traditionally went to men, look at the House of Commons this is a good example, men are supposed to be the main breadwinners.
do you know anyone who can hack? my friend needs help with their account
