At least with on line charging, you can check the charge is correct.
When the toll booths were manned at Dartford, I was charged 2 pounds when towing a small trailer behind a car.
When I questioned it, I was told it was because I had the trailer.
It should have been a pound but I couldn't argue with no scale of charges in sight and a line of vehicles behind.
With no receipt, I should imagine the difference was pocketed.
I had the same again when I took a pickup with a trailer across the Tamar bridge and was charged double what I should have been. As it for work and it was my own cash, I got a receipt.
I complained by e mail and when it was checked on video, the operator agreed I was overcharged, but I didn't get a refund.
