If we made council leaders and MPs obliged to use only public transport we'd have world-leading and inexpensive buses and trains in about 6 months.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Lhayezee Ken Livingstone used mainly public transport while Mayor of London. London currently has a world class mass transportation system . . partly due to it remaining in public hands.

@SunshineGirl I'm not complaining about London (where I live) [much] but I think the broader point stands...
And yes for all his other faults (I was kind of young when he was mayor), Ken did at least put mouth and feet in the same place.

That's by design. Both parties excluded people for reasonable public transportation for at least seventy years! President Eisenhower's Secretary of Commerce once explained it this way - "What's good for General Motors is Good for the Country!".

This government's transport policy, as with all post-war governments in the UK, is overwhelmingly car focused. Where on earth did you get the idea that driving is discouraged?
Therealsteve · 31-35, M
@SunshineGirl The Environment Act 2021, The Levelling Up and Regeneration Act 2023, The Transport Decarbonisation Plan (2021 Policy), and The Traffic Management Act 2004.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Therealsteve Point to one clause that explicitly discourages driving.

Meanwhile, taxpayer subsidies of £4,000 are available to buy new electric cars. I wouldn't mind having £4,000 to spend on my rail travel.

What makes it worse is this is a management position, over two institutions. Since when is a director required to provide personal taxi services to clients?
Except when did the UK Government actually say "we need to discourage driving due to global warming"?

Where’s Guy Fawkes when you need him lol 😂
