are uber taxis reliable and reputable and how do you order one

next month i have to travel to a hospital which is pretty far from me.....believe it or not there's only one taxi service in my area and they are very dubious and not very reliable, ive had a few problems using their taxis in the past....so uber taxis were recommended to me recently, but i've never ordered an uber taxi before and felt a bit 'wary' of using them, because i perceived they're not british and a bit alien to me.

so could anyone advise about uber, how you order one and are they reliable and reputable? i am in the uk.

I only can tell you about my son's experiences here in Germany. He was pleased with his uber drivers and ordered them via an app or their website.
