Good to see both the police and (for a change) reporting media attending the scene and BOTH showing just how wrong he was.

But this is what Reform and it's 'affiliates' do.
Present a lie; get (spurious) support from 'interested business supporters' (thus ensuring it's financial donations keep coming) gaining headlines everywhere and eroding ANY credibility politically as they go.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Picklebobble2 It seems that France and other EU+ countries grant more people asylum and resettlement than the UK, this is especially the case when calculated as a proportion of the existing population.
In the UK, between 2016 and 2022 just over 78,000 asylum seekers were granted protection at initial decision.

According to EU data, over the same period, Germany (1.1 million), Spain (159,000), France (211,000), Italy (175,000), Greece (116,000), Austria (114,000), Sweden (121,000) and Switzerland (83,000) all issued more positive decisions in asylum cases (though this data may not be perfectly comparable with the UK figure).

According to the Migration Observatory, between 2016 and 2021 the UK was the sixth-ranked among EU+ countries when it came to the total number of people offered protection through both asylum and resettlement schemes, though we can’t say for certain how the number of cases accepted by countries in 2022 may have affected this ranking.

@FreddieUK If I knew, I would probably be PM 🙂 British people have a natural pessimism, there is nothing new about that. What is alarming however is the lack of compassion shown by many people protesting outside the hotels or gathering on the beaches. I fear there will be tragedy very soon if people continue to use inflammatory language.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Picklebobble2 I think the two countries are cooperating rather well right now. Can you imagine how the British press would react if there was something akin to the Calais "jungle" in Kent? Those camps are largely due to British underinvestment in asylum processing.

So sorry to hear it's come to such a point.
Forty years ago, I lived 5 years in London as an art student.
I loved the multicultural life. I lived for two years with a Parsee man from Bombay, played chess with a Druiz man in a cafe, rallied with West Indians in Kensington, read the Koran to try to better understand the Muslims... I felt that life was far richer for all these experiences.
hartfire · 61-69
@wildland That's a relief. I hope the more sensible heads prevail.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@hartfire So do many of us. It's worrying to read that some people are even considering voting for those out to destroy the fragile social cohesion we have.
hartfire · 61-69
@FreddieUK The right in politics around the world, via the think-tank the Altas Group and its affiliates, has been researching and experimenting with ways to sway people to their agenda.
The wealthiest have been paying rightwingers from universities, journalism and market research to come up with one liners, reposts, and social & news media campaigns.

The left and greenies need to do the same. We can't keep relying on just the methods worked 80 years ago.
We must do it with honesty and integrity; politicians are more mistrusted than carsalesmen for good reason.
Nothing causes mistrust more than not keeping one's word. Never make a promise one cannot keep.

How much fuel would you need to get a small boat from Calais to Norfolk? Calais to Great Yarmouth is about 200 km, six times as far as Calais to Dover. A small boat with an outboard is much slower than the ferry, it surely would take more than 24 hours of extreme discomfort and risk. And the outboard would have to be refueled more than once I suspect.

These people aren't just easily led they seem utterly unable to think.

I'm not a mariner of any kind so my numbers are not much better than guesses of course. Except for the distances that is.

These people aren't just easily led they seem utterly unable to think

Spot on. This is what happens when emotions completely run wild. It's the mob mentality.
@ninalanyon Exactly! If you tickle their prejudices, critical thinking shuts down and extreme gullibility wins the day. SAD!!!

One compensation is he’s giving £1,000 to MND the charity the rowers we’re raising money for🙂
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@FreddieUK I see he has also stood down as a Reform MP to become independant.

That was as I read reported, and I do not know if he had made any connection with his boat mistake.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@ArishMell He was under investigation within Reform for bullying including (I think his title was, the Chairman - the man who stood down and then rejoined immediately again) and he was suspended at that point. Then he resigned. The police did not find any cause for prosecution. He clearly is a supporter of Reform UK's agenda and possibly more extreme even than their leadership (if that's possible).
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@FreddieUK He's probably not done anything illegal but he does seem a very unpleasant character, and one no political party could do with!
No small boats have ever landed on the Norfolk coast

This is not factually accurate... Both the Romans and the Vikings invaded via the Norfolk coast - of course, that was before we had navigation and knew the shape of individual land masses.

Makes no sense now to ferry immigrants up into the Thames via the east coast in 2025 when the traffickers can drop them in Dover and get back for the next boat load.

Sadly, vigilantism is here to stay as long as the knuckle dragging descendents of the Romans and Vikings feel like not enough is being done to "protect our shores".

Sooo... Where are they sending those rowers back to, Italy or Scandinavia??? 🤔🤔🤔
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@HootyTheNightOwl Nice take on it. 😀
peterlee · M
Where the immigrants land where I am, there are a taxis waiting to take them away to a local seaside town, before dispersing them in the community.

The police are there too, but only with speed cameras to trap unwary motorists.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@peterlee That sounds civilised, but of course is not the answer. Government does need to enact something that will humanely deter people from such foolish travelling arrangements and give people confidence that they are in control.
peterlee · M
@FreddieUK This happened only once , when Richi was PM.

On another occasion, a group of fit young men quickly bolted when coming ashore leaving frightened women and children to drown. Fortunately. our teams rescued them.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@peterlee While the gangs who arranged their crossing and supplied the boat, pocketed the money and would not care if the boat had sunk and all had drowned in mid-voyage.

As has happened on several occasions in the Mediterranean.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
And who wound them up in the first place? . . Rupert Lowe, armchair critic and social media warrior 🤦‍♀
wildland · M
@SunshineGirl No. Ultimately, it was Farage.
KatyO83 · 41-45, F
It's chicken and egg isn't it....
wildland · M
@FreddieUK This is why I do worry a lot that Reform are either going to cause a hung parliament, or get elected outright in 2029.

Either things get better rapidly, or a lot of people are simply going to say "well, Reform don't seem to have a clue, and I'm really not happy with a lot of their policies, but SOMETHING has to change, so I'm voting Reform."
22Michelle · 70-79, T
@wildland It was that kind of thinking that brought us Brexit.
wildland · M
@22Michelle Yep. People didn't want to know about the consequences; they just wanted someone to blame.

@wishforthenight Difficult to read, but with some magnification I managed to make out most of it. Thank you very much, a good contribution.

@FreddieUK I've re-uploaded it
