I think the difference is partly that "British" Indians were not accepted as part of the fabric of British society until much more recently.
But countries have been taking action to defend their remaining citizens and avenge those lost for millenia. That's unsurprising.

I think when British people mean a "recent addition", they mean people of Indian descent living in Britain. The 1950s is fairly recent compared with 1860. But I get your point :)
