R.i.P. George 'Johnny' Johnson, 1921-2022

The last of the 'Dam Busters' has left us. 'Johnny' Johnson took part in 'Operation Chastise', the daring raid on the night of 16th/17th May, 1943. He was a crew member of Avro Lancaster AJ-T (T-Tommy) of RAF 617 squadron based at Scampton, Lincolnshire. Some years later, the English composer Eric Coates commemorated the event with one of his last compositions, the 'Dam Busters' march, which was used in the film of the same name.

What a great post. Thank you for reviving the memory of that music and the legends that inspired it

He was stationed at the Military Camp in Caerphilly in 1945 or 1946 he was a great friend of my Late Parents.

Johnny came to visit them many years ago to chat about old times.

Sad news but I guess he was extremely lucky to survive the raid unlike many of his compatriots
