It's technically much older than that. Technically it started when the Ukranian's defied the fact that the previous dynasty who ruled that area, the Kievan Rus, passed leadership of the providence to Russia. They decided they'd create a sovereign nationstate, within this federation and to the displeasure of many locals. And rather strangely, the anti nationalist left support these nationalists. It's really weird, real history and reality don't factor into what's true, whatever is true is whatever the current thingis you have to think. "A never ending present in which the party is always right" as Orwell put it.

@Evolved Yes, I know. And that's the point in which a lot of people's understanding starts with it. What the TV says. Reading into it past that (or in this case before that) is but a crazy conspiracy theory. Read up the history, Russia and Ukraine have been going at each other militarily for more than just a year, Russia has already invaded Ukraine before what we currently saw on the news a year ago.
