Traffic came to a standstill this morning as scaffolding began being pulled away from the towering new statue of Leonardo McVinci, Auchinairn’s most famous son and the pride of the Scottish Renaissance. With his trusty paintbrush in one hand and his beloved pet haggis clutched in the other, McVinci now watches majestically over the roundabout, his ginger beard and tartan bunnet glinting in the sun.

Born in Auchinairn in 1452 (though some say it was actually the pub car park in Bishopbriggs), McVinci grew up sketching Highland Coos, inventing wind and rain powered contraptions, and painting portraits of the locals who could sit still long enough after three drams. His pet haggis, Wee Hairybazz or just Barry, was said to be his greatest muse, and often was seen gnawing on parchment edges and occasionally walking across wet paint to add his own “brushstrokes.”

Among McVinci’s most iconic masterpieces were
The Morna Lisa, the mysterious lassie whose half smile may have just been wind.
The Vitruvian Haggis, proving once and for all that haggis animals are perfectly proportioned for both rolling doon and running anti clockwise round hills.
The Last Call, a monumental scene of twelve thirsty lads scrambling for their final pints before the bell, forever capturing the agony of bar staff and the desperation of “just one more.”

The statue has been branded a true work of art, paying homage to one of Scotland's greatest ever painters.
