So like the entire spirit and national identity of Portugal is just "we're not Spanish".

While acting culturally Spanish in every other facet.

They don’t even speak Spanish, what are you talking about?
MethDozer · M
@Ryderbike right. They speak a bastardized version of Spanish in order to pretend they are sooo different.
@MethDozer Portuguese and Spanish are two languages that have a lot in common, yet are distinctly different from each other. However, a lot of people make the mistake of assuming that both languages are near identical. But that is far from true. In fact, native speakers of each language detest spoken to in the other.

@Ryderbike It is very simar to old Spanish.

They detest it because they want to pretend to be different.

It's like when an Austrian pretends they aren't German or Swiss pretends they aren't just a Weird German.
@MethDozer now you’re bringing Qanon into the conversation,

We are done. Run along,
MethDozer · M
@Ryderbike qanon what?
@MethDozer conspiracy freaks that make up what people think.
MethDozer · M
@Ryderbike no conspiracy.
@MethDozer “classic” “they”

They detest it because they want to pretend to be different.
MethDozer · M
@Ryderbike No, classic "they" is whe. It is used to insinuate an u known or secret unkown/unnamed group.

This is the proper "they" as both groups being discussed are recognized and named. It's the intended functional use of the word they in the English language here.
@MethDozer But you claim to know how they think. That would be a groupthink accusation usually associated with cults like Trump supporters.
