When he arrived back from North Korea, he was in a vegetated state. North Korea is official statement regarding his condition was that he had a bad reaction to a sleeping pill.

@MrBlueGuy when they looked at his body they said that he appeared to have trauma on both sides of his brain. they think that he was brutally beaten until he went into a coma. also the shape of his feet also suggest some kind of contracture due to brain damage
