Kua hinga te tōtara i Te Waonui-a-Tāne. 1947 to 2026 RIP SAM NEILL

" Iconic Kiwi Actor Sam Neill has died in Australia at the age of 78, his family said today, describing his death as “sudden and unexpected.”

“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life,” the family said in a statement.

The New Zealand actor, best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in the 1993 blockbuster “Jurassic Park,” revealed in his 2023 memoir that he was “possibly dying” from stage-three non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Earlier this year, he said he was cancer-free after undergoing genetic therapy that modified his immune system.

“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free,” the family said, adding that he was being treated at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney.

Neill’s career spanned more than five decades, with roles in “Peaky Blinders,” “The Hunt for Red October” and “The Piano.” Away from acting, he owned vineyards in New Zealand’s Central Otago region.

Sad news. I did like him as an actor. I did not know him as a person but I can imagine that he was just as a gentleman as he was on screen.

I particularly liked his role in the first Jurassic Park in that scene where he and Richard Attenborough's 2 grand children have to climb that electrified fence...

RIP. You were truly a gentleman in my eyes.

Superb actor! I loved him in the TV dramatisation of Jeffrey Archer's "Kane & Abel"

I first noticed him in The Piano, but after that knew that if he was in something it was worth watching. Sad loss.
