I don't think there's one answer to this. Throughout times & across the world borders have served different purposes, for example, where once we were excited to fulfill our potential here in America, oftentimes now we can feel trapped by the system.

Depends on the mentality of the country. Communist controlled Berlin wanted to keep people in. A free country would have open borders to those who enter legally and bring something to the country.

As humans, ambition and desire for power. Humans want to mark their own territory and claim what is their rightful land.

We protect our personal space out of fear, sometimes we don't even know what it is we are afraid of.

I have personal boundaries and that's to keep people who don't respect me out.

A way to claim territory like a dog pissing on everything around him.
