The certificate to carry a pistol

In Italy, the certificate or license required to carry a pistol or revolver in public is called a porto d’armi (specifically, the porto di pistola per difesa personale for personal defense, or the sporting/hunting variant for transport).

Types of Carry/Possession Licenses

• Personal Defense Permit (Porto di pistola per difesa personale):
• Allows the concealed carry of a handgun in public.
• Requires annual renewal.
• Very rarely granted: Applicants must prove a concrete, objective, and documented "threat to life" (e.g., specific risk due to profession or severe danger), as general self-defense is not considered sufficient justification by authorities.
• Recreational / Sporting License (Porto d'armi per uso sportivo):
• Renewable every 5 years.
• Allows you to purchase, own, and transport unloaded firearms to and from official firing ranges (Tiro a Segno Nazionale), stored safely in a trunk. It does not allow carrying a loaded weapon for everyday self-defense.
• Hunting License (Porto d'armi per uso caccia):
• Renewable every 5 years.
• Allows carrying designated hunting weapons during active hunting seasons.

Requirements to Apply

To apply for a firearm license through the local police headquarters (Questura), you generally need:
• Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
• Medical / Mental Fitness:
• A medical certificate from your primary doctor (certificato anamnestico) confirming no history of drug or alcohol abuse.
• A specialized medical clearance certificate issued by a military or local health authority (ASL) doctor.
• Training Certification: Completion of a safe firearm handling and shooting course at a national shooting section (Tiro a Segno Nazionale).
• Clean Criminal Record: Background checks and clearance from the police (casellare giudiziale).
• Application Submission: Filed at the Questura, with approval typically taking a few months of background and police checks.
• Mandatory Registration: Any acquired firearm must be registered with the local authorities within 72 hours of purchase.
