What are the issues in Italy 🇮🇹?
Italy faces a wave of major socioeconomic, security, and political challenges:
Cost of Living and Economic Unrest
Widespread Protests: Thousands of people have taken to the streets in major cities like Milan, Rome, Turin, and Florence to protest the high cost of living, rising housing expenses, inflation, and stagnant wages.
Violent Clashes & Government Crackdown: Some demonstrations have erupted into riots, looting, and clashes with police—particularly involving youth groups. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government has responded by deploying troops (such as 500 soldiers to Milan) and introducing tougher security measures, including proposals to extend preventative detention to minors and hold parents accountable.
National Strikes: Labor unions have organized nationwide strikes (including a major transport strike) to demand higher wages, pension reforms, and increased investments in healthcare and education.
Public Debt: Italy's debt-to-GDP ratio remains very high (projected near 138.5%), creating ongoing fiscal sustainability pressures.
Migration and Border Policies
Offshore Processing & Legal Battles: The government's policy of shifting or processing migrant arrivals outside Italy (such as via facilities in Albania) has faced repeated pushback, rulings, and challenges from Italian and EU courts.
NGO Restrictions: Authorities have continued to heavily fine, inspect, or temporarily detain non-governmental search-and-rescue ships operating in the Mediterranean Sea.
Social and Human Rights Issues
Absolute Poverty: Millions of Italians—including a high percentage of families with foreign national members—continue to live in absolute poverty.
Rule of Law and Discrimination: Ongoing public debates center on media freedom, police racial profiling, anti-Roma laws, restrictions on surrogacy and LGBTQ+ rights, and tighter rules on foreign students and attire in schools.
