Breaking news from Rome

Italy is facing widespread protests and heavy security deployments today over the rising cost of living, budget cuts, and government policies.

Key Developments
Troop Deployment in Milan:
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government has deployed 500 additional soldiers to Milan—the country's fashion and finance hub—following violent clashes, looting, and store vandalism during previous weekend demonstrations.
Nationwide Protests:
Demonstrations spanning multiple political factions—including student groups and workers—are taking place across at least eight major cities, including Rome and Milan, under heavy police and drone surveillance.
Truckers' Strikes & Shortages:
Ongoing transport and truckers' strikes have disrupted supply chains across southern Italy, leaving supermarket shelves and gas stations empty in some areas and halting regional production like buffalo mozzarella.
Political Tensions:
Protesters in cities like Naples have demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Meloni as the government introduces stricter penalties for minors involved in urban unrest and a controversial elections overhaul.

Meloni, "Young people … came to the square to smash things, steal and film themselves doing it," Meloni said. "This is a phenomenon that we must address seriously, also to prevent those images from becoming a model for others to imitate."

The decree also creates a new criminal offense of violent participation in a demonstration, punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to 20,000 euros ($22,500). Penalties increase if offenders cover their faces or someone is injured.

Protesters will be responsible for paying for property damage, with parents liable for damage caused by minors, Meloni said.

You break it, you buy it and go to jail.
