Group beating and robbery of two tourists in Palermo, four arrests made

The assault at the end of May in Piazza Sant'Anna involved 15 people who surrounded and beat the victims.

The carabinieri of the Piazza Marina station, along with the military from the Brancaccio, Villagrazia di Palermo, Oreto, Centro stations, and the Arezzo company, executed a custody order in prison issued by the investigating judge, at the request of the prosecutor, against 4 young non-EU nationals aged between 19 and 21 (one of whom is already in prison for other reasons), accused in collaboration of robbery and personal injury. The investigations shed light on a robbery and an assault that occurred on the night of May 30, 2026, in Piazza Sant'Anna. The victims were two tourists, accompanied by some friends, who suddenly found themselves surrounded by a group of about fifteen young people who beat them and also snatched their cell phones. Thanks to the analysis of the footage from the surveillance systems and witness testimonies, the military were able to identify the perpetrators.

An illegal dump of about 6,500 square meters has been seized by the finance officers of the Lentini station in the Mastrocciardi area, in the territory of Francofonte. The area, linked to a company active in the construction sector, was allegedly used for the uncontrolled storage of waste without the necessary environmental permits. The investigation began from a flyover conducted with an AW139 helicopter from the Sicilian aeronaval department, equipped with sophisticated remote sensing systems. It was precisely from the reconnaissance activity that the fenced area, which attracted the attention of the finance officers, was identified.

Ground checks led to the discovery of a significant amount of plastic, iron, and wood, as well as paint waste and related containers. According to findings, the indiscriminate storage and burial of materials over time would have significantly altered the land's configuration, raising its level by several meters compared to the neighboring lands. To prevent the continuation of the activity, the entire area has been placed under preventive seizure. The responsible party has been reported at liberty to the judicial authority. Investigations continue to determine the quantity and type of waste present and to verify any contamination of the subsoil and nearby aquifers. Necessary interventions for the site's remediation will also be assessed. The operation is part of the efforts to combat environmental crimes carried out by the finance police of Syracuse in the area.
