Some recollections of Rome in 2013.

In 2013, Rome saw the election of Ignazio Marino as mayor and the historic election of Pope Francis, the first non-European pope. The city also experienced a tourism boom partly due to the "Pope Francis effect," while the AS Roma football team had a surprisingly strong season and the Italian Open tennis tournament took place.

Politics and Religion
Municipal Election: Ignazio Marino was elected mayor in a runoff election held on June 9–10, 2013, defeating outgoing Mayor Gianni Alemanno. The election had a lower turnout than previous elections.

Papal Election: Following Pope Benedict XVI's resignation, a conclave was held to elect a new pope. On March 13, 2013, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected as Pope Francis.

Tourism
Tourism Growth: Rome saw a more than 5% increase in tourism in 2013, with 12.6 million visitors compared to 11.9 million in 2012.

"Pope Francis Effect": The new pope's popularity led to a significant number of visitors, with over 6.6 million people attending events to see him in the latter half of the year.

Sports
Football (AS Roma): The 2013–14 season was notable for the club. After a disappointing end to the 2012–13 season (which saw them finish 6th and lose the Coppa Italia final), the team, under new manager Rudi Garcia, had a strong 2013–14 season, finishing second in Serie A.

Tennis (Italian Open): The 2013 Italian Open tennis tournament was held from May 13–19 at the Foro Italico.

Other events
Erich Priebke Funeral: The funeral of SS officer Erich Priebke took place in Rome in October 2013. It was marked by clashes between his supporters and anti-fascist protesters. The events led to the authorities eventually seizing his body and burying it in a secret location.
