Went to a typical working class Irish pub near where I’m staying
I’m staying south of Dublin near the coast, not in the city center where all the other American tourists are at. And I’ve not run into any other Americans at all….mostly other Irish people, people from the UK, Europeans, or Brazilians.
Went to a local pub near the apartment I’m staying in after getting back from a long day trip. Turns out it’s a more real working class pub, not touristy at all.
Chatted with a couple of nice older construction workers initially. One of them bought me a pint of Guinness. They had been to the US before, one had lived in Queens in NYC for about a year 10 years ago. He was kind of freaked out by the loose gun laws and the gun violence there. He has hunting rifles at home in Ireland but there are strict laws against carrying guns around on the streets. In NYC he had seen a fight break out that ended with someone getting shot and killed, and others there acted like it’s just another occurrence of an everyday thing, and he couldn’t believe it. Neither of them supported Trump, they believed him to be a very dangerous person with a dangerous following. But they also didn’t understand why the democrats put Biden back on the ticket initially given his age and clearly deteriorated mental state. They think the US should reconsider how much support it is giving to Israel, as they believe things have obviously and undeniably changed from a goal of eliminating Hamas to the complete genocide of all Palestinians, which isn’t something that anyone should be supporting.
After they left I talked with a young guy who had never been to the US before. But said he wanted to go just to see how bad all of the “control” is with the automated face detection, advancement of AI, tracking people, etc. Made reference to it being like China, and said that such a thing would never happen in Ireland because people like the IRA would put a stop to it with their bombings.
Ummmmmm…. Young hothead angry person?!?
