4.0 magnitude quake registered near Lefkada

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck near the island of Lefkada in western Greece on Sunday afternoon according to the Athens-based Geodynamic Institute.

The institute stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was registered 4 kilometers southwest of the island, at a depth of 14.6 kilometers.

"Epicentre" at depth? A mis-translation of the report, surely?

The focus there, yes, the site of the slip itself; but the epicentre of an earthquake is the most affected region on the land or sea-bed surface above it.

Still, it is not surprising, for the Mediterranean is one of the world's most tectonically complicated regions, with a lot of plate-shuffling going on; but basically the African continent still creeping Northwards to close the Mediterranean while also fracturing along the line of the Great Rift Valley. (The Valley is a result of that, not the cause.)
