I never had a problem with French people trying to steer me towards English. In Germany, on the other hand, they always seemed to want to practice their English on me. And there are sometimes linguistic sensitivities to be tripped over. I once ventured a crucial distance outside Brussels and asked the way to somewhere...in French. I got a long and detailed reply...in Flemish. Fortunately the Flemish word for 'left' (links) is the same as the German one so I got there in the end. As for the Italians, they appreciate it if you try.
