Hong Kong is a SAR (Special Administrative Region) of the PRC since the UK's lease expired in 1997. Macau is another SAR within the PRC, which was a Portuguese territory until 1999.
Taiwan considers itself to be the ROC (Republic of China), a position with which the PRC totally disagrees, but several countries recognize the ROC as a separate country from the PRC.

Taiwan (ROC) used to represent the PRC in the UN until 1971, when the PRC assumed that direct role, knocking Taiwan out of the UN in the process. Taiwan is now the most populous state that is not a member of the UN.
