Does Alberta really want to join the USA?

A few nights ago on a British TV news show (Newsnight) an American Republican spokesman - perhaps he was even a Congressman - asserted that not only did Greenlanders want to join the USA but when it comes to Canada, Alberta was already asking to join. I know he made the first bit up, but it was news to me about Alberta. Is there an iota of truth in his claim or that another hallucination?

There are are some maple maga Albertans that want to join the US. Some Albertans want to seperate; they have enough names in a petition now to hold a referendum.

@JimboSaturn I know what Joe thinks, but do you think there will be many who vote for independence?

@FreddieUK No they won't win the referendum but it concerns me that it's coming to that.
@JimboSaturn Last I heard Ipsos polls have them at 12%

@JimboSaturn Our nearest equivalent is Scotland and that was close but decisive last time. The history is very different (and longer) but the passion no doubt as real on both sides.

@FreddieUK I remember that. Actually they got some tips from Quebec which has also had two rerendums and they are probably having a referendum as well!

@JimboSaturn So we are going to have two referendums and the US threatening us. It's not going to be a good year.

@FreddieUK At least Scotland was a country once and had a different language and history. Alberta is just angry people.

@JimboSaturn When I visited Quebec I was reminded of the separatist struggle years ago. Apparently initially there was an exodus of monoglot English speakers, but it settled down and is doing as well as anywhere else now.
