Alright so the Albertan government is openly collaborating with the US over an "independence" referendum we don't want

US just openly conquered a sovereign state.

This referendum goes forward and although it's a sure loser I can see a fabricated case of election fraud and the US runs in to save the day.

And suddenly things get really fuckin weird

The US genuinely just kidnapped a world leader and are now indefinitely ruling a sovereign nation.

These are not the same thing.
